From Courtroom Challenge to Crowdfunded Innovation: A Trial Lawyer’s Quest for the Ideal iPad Case

Jamie Daigle, a trial lawyer based in Portland, Oregon, frequently utilizes his iPad in court proceedings. However, like many users, he recognized the challenges associated with using the device for extended periods, particularly its lack of stable, comfortable handling and stand options. This recognition spurred him to develop a superior casing solution almost immediately after acquiring his first iPad.

Within days, using readily available household materials, Daigle constructed his initial prototype. Confident that he had engineered “the most comfortable, ergonomic and functional iPad case available,” Daigle and his newly formed company, DC Mobile Design LLC, have launched a campaign on Kickstarter to secure the necessary funding to bring their prototype to market.

The product, named “Clutch,” is described as offering a “transformational experience” for iPad use. Clutch functions as a protective case while integrating three key features:

  1. A comfortable, ergonomic handle.
  2. A stable stand supporting six different orientations.
  3. A dedicated storage unit for a USB cable and headphones.

Daigle asserts, “I believe that this case helps make the iPad an even better tool for lawyers.”

DC Mobile Design LLC has set a goal of raising at least $75,000 through the Kickstarter campaign by January 18, 2012. These funds are designated for transitioning the prototype into a commercial product, as detailed on the campaign page:

The engineering is nearly complete and our latest prototype has been in constant use for 5 months. Now that we are satisfied that the design and functionality meet our criteria, we are ready to go to manufacturing. This is the point where we need your help. There are many parts that need to be tooled, stamped or cast. These processes are expensive. If we meet our funding goal our project will become a reality.

The campaign accepts pledges of any denomination. Pledges of $60 or more will entitle contributors to receive a Clutch once manufacturing is complete. A $100 pledge secures a limited-edition version of the Clutch, along with a padded carrying case, and higher contribution levels qualify for further rewards.

In the video provided below, Daigle and his co-developer, Bryan Churchill, demonstrate the features of the Clutch. Additional details, photos, and information are available on their dedicated Kickstarter page.
